Some Christian Evidences authors claim that over 300 Messianic Prophecies are in the Old Testament. One example is Josh McDowell, in "Evidence that Demands A Verdict". He says, in chapter 9, "The Old Testament, written over a 1,000-year period, contains several hundred references to the coming Messiah. All of these were fulfilled in Jesus Christ..." McDowell quotes Floyd Hamilton, "The Basis of Christian Faith", saying "Canon Liddon is authority for the statement that there are in the Old Testament 332 distinct predictions which were literally fulfilled in Christ".
For a prophecy to be "Messianic", it must be a prophecy of the Messiah, relating to the Messiah, or a "reference" to the Messiah, and this must be understood by the text in its context -- and not some special knowledge gained later.
There are multiple ways that a prophecy can be said to be fulfilled. The English Dictionary (Webster's New Twentieth Century Dictionary, Unabridged, 2nd Edition),
1.To fill to the full (Archaic)
2.to carry out something promised, desired, expected, predicted, etc.
3.to obey
4.to fill the requirements
5.to complete; to bring to an end
The scriptures commonly listed (i.e. Floyd Hamilton's list as given by Josh McDowell) for proving over 300 Messianic prophecies can be categorized into 4 groups:
•Predictive Fulfillment
•Double Meaning Fulfillment (rare)
•Typological Fulfillment
•Duplicated Claim
•Dubious Usage
Of these, only the predictive fulfillment and Double Meaning Fulfillment (a special type of predictive fulfillment) can be used as "evidence". Typological Fulfillment cannot be used as evidence since there is no clear reference to Messiah or any predictive element relating to Messiah..
For this the prophecy must predict something in the future that could not be reasonably known. If it could be reasonably known, then although it could be said to be predictive, it is not evidence of divine revelation.
This is a special case of Predictive Fulfillment and is very rare. The propecy has a primary reference which is about a specific event, and there must be context which demands another fulfillment outside of the primary fulfillment. It is not reasonable to take an event and attempt to pour extra meaning into it that is not supported by the context.
One example of a double-meaning prophecy is Isaiah 7:14, where a prophecy is made to King Ahaz about deliverance from God (a son would be born and before he is old enough to know right from wrong, the two nations that Ahaz feared would be broken, 7:8-9, 14-16). In chapter 8 the fulfillment is recorded, and negative consequences of Israel's choices recorded. Then in chapter 9 another child is declared to be born and of his reign there is to be no end (9:7) and in that day the results will be much different than in chapter 8 for it will be a time of justice, and his name will be "The mighty God", "The everlasting Father", the "Prince of Peace" -- names not appropriate for mere men, but appropriate for Messiah. Thus a 2nd fulfillment is demanded by the context.
Some Old Testament passages said to be fulfilled by Messiah, have no reference to Messiah - for example Hosea 11:1, which says:
Ho 11:1 ¶ When Israel was a child, then I loved him, and called my son out of Egypt.
Matthew records that this passage was fulfilled by Messiah:
Mt 2:15 And was there until the death of Herod: that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, Out of Egypt have I called my son.
This fulfillment was not of a predictive prophecy for there is nothing predictive about Hosea 11:1 -- this is a historical reference about the nation of Israel, and there is no reference to Messiah. How then can this be said to be fulfilled? It cannot be dictionary definitions #2,3,4,5 (from Webster). It can however be according to definition #1 (to fill to the full). Messiah was predicted to be someone like Moses, and from the tribe of Judah, and thus it would be reasonable to expect him to be like "Israel" (since he was a son of Israel). This fulfillment then is a "filling to the full" the picture of Messiah, like Israel facing persecution and being called by God out of it.
There is nothing predictive about Hosea 11:1 and it has no internal reference to Messiah, and thus it cannot be used as "evidence" that this event was predicted by scripture. It is an example of typological fulfillment. The dictionary meaning (Apple Dictionary) of "type" is
1. a category of people or things having common characteristics
2. a person or thing symbolizing or exemplifying the ideal or defining characteristics of something
So, a typological fulfillment is one for which Messiah is identified as having common characteristics with Israel, God's people or David the King, etc. For example, when David faces opposition from those who oppose God, Messiah is expected to face similar opposition.
Typology is used to describe baptism in 1 Peter 3:1 - "There is also an antitype which now saves us -- baptism..." This relates the salvation in baptism to the salvation through water for Noah and his family -- a similar picture of God providing salvation through water.
The most common Greek word translated "fulfill" in the KJV (which speaks of prophetic fulfillment) is "pleroo" or forms (ekpleroo:1; anapleroo:2) of this (35 of 37 times). The greek word "pleroo" is found 90 times in the NT and translated "fulfill" 74 times. Other words translated "fulfill" (for prophetic fulfillment) are "teleo" (Ac 13:29) and "sunteleo" (Mk 13:4).
The concept of filling to the full ("pleroo") is found in the words of Jesus in Matthew 5:
(Mat 5:17-18) ""Do not think that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill(4137:pleroo). {18} "For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled(1096:ginomai)."
Greek |
Meaning |
pleroo |
(Strongs: 4137) to make replete, i.e. (lit.) to cram (a net), level up (a hollow)... |
ginomai |
(Strongs: 1906) ...be brought to pass, ... be finished ... |
So, these two words communicate that Jesus fulfilled the Mosaic Law by "filling to the full" - to the point of completion - the picture and intent of the Law (atonement).
Another example of "filling to the full" is the statement of Jesus in John 3:
(John 3:29) ""He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom's voice. Therefore this joy of mine is fulfilled(4137:pleroo)."
Although advertised as over 332, the total count found for this list is only 276, with about 100 being typological, 63 being dubious usage of the text, and 21 duplicate claims. This leaves about 93 as useful, compelling evidence.
It is unreasonable to list each verse or line of a single cohesive prophetic statement as separate instances of predictions for the same concept. It is also a duplication to list the same concept twice for a single scripture reference. Examples of these which occur in the list are provided below:
Claim 1 |
Claim 2 |
Comment |
Mission (Deut 18:18) |
Will be a prophet (Deut 18:18) |
Since the mission was to be a prophet, the "mission" and "being a prophet" are the same claim. This is a duplication |
Seed of Abraham (Gen 12:2) |
Human Generation (Gen 12:3) |
Being the seed of Abraham is identical to being a human - a duplication of the claim. |
Human Generation (Isaiah 11:1) |
Family Line of Jesse (Isaiah 11:1) |
Being of the line of Jesse is identical to being a human - a duplication of the claim |
Family line of Jesse (Isaiah 11:1) |
Family line of Jesse (Isaiah 11:10) |
These two statements are part of a single cohesive narrative. It is a duplication to list it twice by using different lines of the same narrative. |
Here are some examples of dubious usage of O.T. passages with no messianic reference or reasonable typological usage:
Scripture Reference |
Notes |
Amos 8:9 “I will make the sun go down at noon and darken the earth in broad daylight. (ESV) |
This is figurative language used in Amos' vision of "summer fruit" to describe God's judgment - "the end has come upon my people Israel; I will not pass by them anymore" (v2) concerning the coming Assyrian captivity (9:4). |
Isaiah 41:4 [4] Who has performed and done this, calling the generations from the beginning? I, the LORD, the first, and with the last; I am he. (ESV)
|
This is given as a reference to demonstrate the pre-existence of Messiah. However, the passage is expressly speaking of Yahweh -- not his son, annointed, or Messiah. |
Genesis 3:15 [15] I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” |
This is given as a reference to the Advent of Christ. This is speaking of mankind and the relationship between man and the serpent. Nothing mentioned in the verse requires the coming of a Messiah. |
Since Jesus is accepted as deity, some may argue that Isaiah 41:4 could be viewed as typological usage. Hank Hennegraff says:
It cannot be argued that God "prefigures a ... greater reality" of Jesus. Jesus' own testimony was that he was not greater than his father (John 13:16).
It could be said that Christ is a "type" (same classification or group) of God the Father in that he is deity, but this must be argued from other revelation - not from this verse. If this is considered to be a passage to be typologically fulfilled, then every description of God would fall into the same category.
Here are some examples of dubious usage of O.T. passages with no messianic reference, but which could be considered typologically fulfilled:

Notes |
Micah 4:1 It shall come to pass in the latter days that the mountain of the house of the LORD shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and it shall be lifted up above the hills; and peoples shall flow to it, (ESV) |
Although this passage does show that God would exalt his people - there is nothing in this context that predicts the Messiah. This may be the intent when demonstrated by combining it with other passages, but it is not stated here. |
Psalm 89:4 ‘I will establish your offspring forever, and build your throne for all generations.’” Selah (ESV) |
When taken with other predictions (e.g. Gen 12:3), this may be taken as typological about Messiah. However, this may also be seen as a re-statement of the sure mercies of David. |
Zechariah 13:6 And if one asks him, ‘What are these wounds on your back?’ he will say, ‘The wounds I received in the house of my friends.’ |
The stated prediction is the piercing of Jesus. However, this is only about wounds on the back. |
Here are some examples of typological usage of O.T. passages that can be used of Messiah.
Since Messiah was prophesied to be of the seed of David, it was expected that he would be like David and thus also "annointed", a "son of God", and Messiah's enemies would be God's enemies -- just like the case of David.
Scripture Reference |
Notes |
Psalm 89:20 [20] I have found David, my servant; with my holy oil I have anointed him, (ESV) |
The is used to reference the first advent of Jesus. However, this is expressly speaking of David and there is nothing predictive here about Messiah. |
Psalm 89:26 [26] He shall cry to me, ‘You are my Father, my God, and the Rock of my salvation.’ (ESV) |
This is used to reference the divinity of Jesus. However, this is expressly speaking of David (v3,20) and David's response in this saying. There is nothing predictive here. In Jer. 31:9 God refers to Israel as his son. Ps. 82 speaks of the judges of Israel as children of the "Most High". Thus for David to call God his father is not without precedent. |
Psalm 69:9 [9] For zeal for your house has consumed me, and the reproaches of those who reproach you have fallen on me. (ESV) |
This is used to reference the temple purification. |
There are some OT passages which are not predictive, but are used in the NT to imply prophetic foreknowledge. One example is Acts 1:16:
Ac 1:16 Men [and] brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.
This passage records the words of Peter who said that God spoke through David concerning Judas -- that he was "numbered with us" and "obtained part of this ministry" and purchased a field with the "reward of iniquity" he hanged himself.
The statements of David referenced here is likely Psalm 41:9 and Psalm 69:28
Psalm 41:9 (concerning the betrayal of Judas)
Ps 41:9 Even my own familiar friend in whom I trusted, Who ate my bread, Has lifted up his heel against me.
Psalm 69:28 (concerning Judas' end)
Ps 69:28 "Let them be blotted out of the book of the living, And not be written with the righteous."
Both of these passages in the Psalms are "typologically" fulfilled in Judas. There is nothing predictive in Ps. 41 or Ps. 69 - it is about David and his enemies.
How then can Peter say that God spoke this of Judas? David, as God's annointed, spoke prophetically about his enemies as the enemies of God (Ps 69:9 "the reproaches of those who reproach You have fallen on me."). Thus Judas, by his betrayal, is categorized as one of the enemies of God and thus typologically portrayed in Ps. 49, and 61.
Three examples of predictive O.T. passages include
Scripture Reference |
Notes |
Deuteronomy 18:15 |
Although not specified here as Messiah, God would raise up a prophet like Moses (a law-giver, one who brought deliverance from oppression, etc.) |
Isaiah 53:5 |
Messiah predicted to be pierced by a sword or spear (non-specific), and to be crushed for the iniquities of the people |
Micah 5:2 [2] But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days |
Messiah would be born in Bethlehem |
Although each forms only a small portion of the picture of the coming Messiah, these are plainly prophetic, and widely accepted as predictive.
Although the number 332 referenced by McDowell, Thompson (and likely others) is inflated and includes many typological references, there are about 93 references to predictive messianic passages. These form compelling evidence for identifying Jesus as Messiah.
